Unless you were into F-1 racing, most people wouldn't know him. Shame he died so young, but I don't think he would have ever quit racing, even though he said he would. JMHO. PJ

Famous Photo, The Golden Boy!

Article,

A sad day, I still remember it. The rivalry between Hawthorn and Moss, fair and honest on both sides, was great stuff to a 17-year old.
Ill health would probably have ensured that he stay retired.

I do recall reading an article years later where Moss? admitted that they were racing when the accident happened.

I remember that day also, and probably have a similar newspaper clipping somewhere. I was a fan of both Hawthorn & Peter Collins - Collins had been killed a year or so before. The photo of Hawthorn in the Cooper-Bristol shows his characteristic expression when driving - he always looked like a fish about to grab some bait. Always wore a bow tie racing, too. I still have 2 of his books & have read each multiple times.

It's odd because I'm not usually a book reader but several months ago my brother sent me The Limit. I'm right now reading the part where Mike Hawthorn was killed. I had never heard of him.
