Now that I have my WiFi back, there seems to be one more problem. I think it's a missing driver but not sure. I have three USB ports on this machine, a Toshiba C855D Satellite, the single port on the left side is working fine, but I've lost the two ports on the right side, the two are side by side. When I plug my external hard drive into either one of them I get a momentary light on the drive, then it goes out and the ports seem dead. I even tried my mouse in both of these ports and it doesn't work either. How do I get these back? Probably simple, but I'm not a computer whiz. Any help on this? PJ
 
Paul - I'm assuming those two ports worked recently. Plug in another USB device (flash stick or something) and see if they work in either of those ports.

Just tried it Tom and no go! Only thing I can think of is a missing or corrupt driver. Yes they were working yesterday, but not now. Only thing I did was to install the WiFi driver that Greg put me on to and it gave me back my WiFi. If it was a loose nut or bolt, it wouldn't be a problem LOL, but I'm not the greatest for figuring out computer problems. PJ
 
In your device manager, try expanding the USB folder, should be at the bottom of the list. See if there is a red X by any of the USB entries. That would be an easy indicator of something broken.

Also, back in the dark ages, we'd often fix this by using Control Panel/Device Manager, remove the USB port, then restart the system. Windows would find the device and automatically install and enable it.

Well, nothing seems to work on restoring the USB drivers. Windows update isn't helping. I guess I'm going to have to buy a driver program to get the driver back. Is there a free driver program out there. I hate to purchase a program just for one driver. PJ
 
Paul - what did you try? Windows update has nothing to do with adding drivers that are missing. And drivers don't cost anything to download. But you first need to see if you actually need drivers.

What happened when you removed the USB from Device Manager, then restarted the computer?

It isn't unheard of to install a driver that messes up another. With your serial # in hand, go to the Toshiba driver sight HERE There is a USB driver that was released a month ago which may be the one you need called "AMD USB Filter Driver", version 2.5.1.28. I'm not sure this is the exact driver, but that is what came up when I entered the C855D-S5320 model #.


Went back and re-read both threads. Not sure where the S5320 came from, doesn't look like Paul said that. Anyway, enter the serial # and look for the driver for your particular version of Win 7. as in 32 or 64 bit.
 
IRQ conflicts could be the issue. Toshiba's site (as Greg says) can sort out what the conflict is. A sharing IRQ conflict with that Realtek driver loaded for the WiFi may be the fix. What do you see in ~Device Manager~? Is there a yellow question mark anywhere?

Windows on a Toshiba running an AMD engine can be problematic. Trust the Toshiba site for the fix, they are usually proactive.
 
I AM IMPRESSED! Greg, Tom, Doc, with your help I have everything working again! Greg, thanks for the Toshiba site, I got the needed drivers there. I needed 2 drivers according to Toshiba. Back in business. Many thanks guys! Don't know what I'd do without your help and I've never even met you. Gotta love the Internet, at times. :encouragement: PJ

Good for you, Paul! Something to keep in mind: It ain't Toshiba's fault! It's the bloatware we call Windows that causes the hardware problems. Different hardware architecture requires different "drivers." Your issue likely was an I/O bus problem along with the USB IRQ assignment.

Tom. the WiFi driver likely was forced to use an IRQ already in use by the USB ports. They then had "no place to go" without guidance. The WiFi chipset would have a high priority in the "pecking order" of things... Redmond would want connectivity above all else.:wink:

ISTR Paul rearranged the deck chairs on that Toshi. Retro-stuffed Win7 onto it.

This one did Tom, I haven't a clue why they seemingly disappeared. It was after I installed the WiFi driver that they didn't show up. It might be what Doc said about the WiFi taking over?? Whatever caused the problem is gone and all is well! PJ
