Solder reflowing tips?

I have a problem in my Vox amp which may be cold solder related. Question: do I just reheat the joint till it melts and move on or do I apply some sort of flux or paste first? I am NOT electronics guy in the least bit and don't want to screw this thing up.

P.S I just want to do a few joints, not the whole board (yet).

You can just reheat to flow the solder without using flux. You may have to add a touch of new solder to the joint to ensure sufficient coverage. Be careful to use so much as to bridge any circuit legs that are not supposed to be bridged.

RomanH is spot on. I'd put just enough fresh solder on the iron to get proper heat transfer and re-flow what's there.

P.S I just want to do a few joints. Really Billy is that legal.

really Billy is that legal?

The pot for the amp models was acting up so I bought a new one to replace it. When I took it apart I notice the four tabs one the top of the potentiometer that are bent over to assemble it were loose. I bent them over to see if that would solve the problem; bingo, works perfect.

The moral of this story is: If you want great tone while playing electric guitar, you gotta keep tight tabs on your pot.

+1
Also, use just enough heat to reflow the solder...too much heat can be bad for components...

I thought the same thing but I've been reading where guyts are putting populated PCB's in toaster ovens and reflowing the whole thing at once.
