TR4/4A TR4 Engine Number doesn't seem to make sense

Nope, that engine number would be for a 1965 TR4A. But maybe there was some sort of transcription error? The photos certainly look like an early TR4 motor, with SU carbs, early rocker and I think I even see a road draft tube sticking up.

The heads were not serialized, so that is probably a casting number.

Our cars have a lot of history most of which none is documented. You just have to learn to know what to look for and then guess what actually happened.
Like a 1963 TR4 with a short bubble in the hood. And then when I stripped it down to repaint, I found blue and yellow paint on rear fenders and white and black on front fenders. Oh yes, the engine number was an early TR4. The carbs were HS6's from a Volvo. Yes many of these cars have gone through a lot of history. So often people asssume that what is on the car now was there when it was new or replaced in kind. After 50 years that is hardly true.

Too true!
The frustrating/tantalizing part, to me, is that some of the undocumented history may have happened even before the original owner took possession. Options like wire wheels, overdrive and even body color were swapped around by the dealers and importer (Cal Sales) to create whatever would sell. Mistakes were made too; for example John Macartney wrote of a car that was "ready for delivery" with wire wheels on one side, disc wheels on the other, and one of each in the boot!

According to Roger Williams " How to Restore Triumph TR2, TR3 & TR3A" :
"The TR4A head was introduced to TR4's at engine number CT21471. It has the number 511695 cast into it and is the best of the four-cylinder tops." He goes on to explain in a bit more detail why this is considered the best head.

We have an early tr4 in the shop right now for a blown motor. The block was
ruined but was the earliest I have ever seen, CT112e, likely made the first week of production.
I hated to scrap it.....
