AN5 versus AN5L

Maybe this is something I should know, but don't, and I can't seem to find an answer using Google:

What's the difference between the model designations AN5 and AN5L for a Bugeye Sprite? Does the latter indicate left-hand drive?

Thanks!
Dan

AN5L is indeed left hand drive. My RHD Bugeye has no "L" in the VIN.

Hi Drew,

Drat! I just ordered personalized license plates that read "1959 AN5" (7 characters is the limit) and my Bugeye is LHD of course. Suppose anyone will care? :rolleyes2:

Dan

No one will know. AN5 is still correct anyways, as that's the correct prefix for a Bugeye. The "L" is just an additional piece for LHD cars.

Maybe I can just paint an "L" at the end of the character string. :cool-new:

A = small capacity A series engine
N = BMC code for open two seater sports car
5 = fifth series of Healey

The AN5 works fine, great choice of plate.

Thanks, guys! 'Guess I can put the plate on the car without too much guilt after all. :congratulatory:

The addition of an "L" is common to British cars designations, at least with BMC codes. Morris Minors have the same designation in the prefix, as I expect do many more. It's sometimes mistaken for a 1 or a slash by the uninformed.
