It's 4 am here in Utah, and we're up and getting ready to leave for California. Going to be a bloody long day, but worth it. Should be on the road by 5 am.

If I can I'll post some updated to this thread as the journey progresses.

G'luck! :encouragement:

A day to be remembered! Good luck to you and the '59 UK-Spec RHD white w/black interior Bugeye Sprite!

Tom

California, here I come! be safe

Just leaving Vegas, little over 1/2 way there

Good luck bringing it home safely Drew!!!

We're in Barstow for the night, car's on the trailer. Stupid California traffic added almost 4 hrs travel time. Exhausted, happy to be in bed.

Hope everything continues to go well Drew. That stretch between Barstow and Vegas is no fun.

Really glad you didn't try to "tough it out" and drive all the way home. Excitement plus exhaustion = risk.

Safe arrival to you both!
Tom

Barstow was always our destination for the night, but we had hoped to get here quite a bit earlier yesterday. 2.5 hours of stop/go traffic up the pass heading north (plus 1.5 hours earlier on the way down) made for a long day.

Today won't be too bad, we'll just be very happy to get out of California!

I can't tell you how relieved I was to get the car on the trailer and all tied down. First off, with borrowed gear there's always the fear something won't work. Second, this was all quite a whirlwind week, and only now is it sinking in just what I've done.

Glad that you got it loaded safely! I was worried about that part (his driveway)
Have a good and safe trip home

Got home at 6:30pm UT time on Sunday. Long weekend, but worth it. Even had time to drive around the block after dinner.

Photos and the whole trip story to follow in the next couple days.

heh if you get this thread....Put something over the frontal of the BE so sand ,pebbles or worse etc. don't blast the hood and or windshield!

Luckily the trailer had a raised front to protect the car. Made it unscathed.

Wrapping up the trip

Well, that was a lot of travel compressed into a little weekend. 18 hours on Saturday and another 9 or so on Sunday. Four hours of traffic snarls in California, including a 2.5 hour stretch heading back up Cajon pass. If I never drive in California again, it'll be too soon.

I've got the car in the garage now, working on taking inventory of what needs to be done and what I have. Quite a few boxes of parts were included, and I'm still going through it all. Overall it's a solid little car, definitely has needs but well worth fixing. More to come on all the projects later.

Here's the seller and myself (I'm on the right) just after I loaded the car onto the trailer. The borrowed trailer worked perfectly, Bugeye fit just right. At this point I was feeling huge relief that the car was okay, fit on the trailer, and could be easily tied down. Big weight off the shoulders.

We loaded the car on the main road -- seller's driveway was a bit nutty (steep) and it was just easier to do it there. Right down the road was a decent sized parking lot where I could get everything tied down and ready for travel.

The happy sight of a little car following you home (honey, it followed me home -- can I keep it?). Headlights were just peeking up over the trailer.

2.5 hours just like this, heading up Cajon pass -- there was a brush fire in the canyon. At this point we were tired, worn out, and ready to be oh so done with driving.

Here we are resting at Cove Fort, Utah. Just a few hours from home at this point, almost ready to relax for good.

Getting ready to unload the car. Lots of miles under our belts, everything traveled well and safely.

Snug in the garage for now. After a quick dinner I took the hard top off and went for a short drive around the neighborhood. The little 948 has good oil pressure and pulls pretty well. Even with the clutch issues it drove well enough for a celebratory lap around the block.

Lots to do from here, a project that will take years and many dollars, but I'm okay with that. It's good to have a Bugeye again.

Nice! I knew you'd come back into the fold eventually. Please tell me those hideous side view mirrors will be the first things you remove from the car......get those in the trash ASAP!

I'll have to post more pics soon -- side mirrors, radio and antenna, luggage rack, fog lights are all gone now.
