For those who volunteered to "help if needed" during the trip: I'm departing September 16 or 17 from Connecticut, heading up into New York then into Ontario, then west to Washington, then south per the map on my blogpage.

Just yesterday I was able to confirm that the photo from June 1959 Motor Trend magazine really does show my dad, me, and my brother, looking at a 1959 Mercedes-Benz 190 as it passed through Fort Worth on its cross country test drive. Here's the photo:

Until yesterday I had no proof the Mercedes ever went through Fort Worth. Even Motor Trend, and Mercedes-Benz USA had no record of the original route, and believed it went from Los Angeles directly to Kansas City.

Yesterday I found an original M-B ad, showing the actual route across the USA. It *did* pass through Fort Worth on the way to Dallas. I've been looking for that missing bit of evidence for four years. Here's the ad:

This is a wonderful piece of missing information for your story. Congrats on finding it! Looking forward to seeing you in Logan. If possible, I plan to meet you somewhere between Salt Lake and Logan and "escort" you into Logan in the Healey.

That would be so cool if it works out. My schedule isn't set in stone, to say the least, but I'm guesstimating the Utah leg in the last few days of September.

Tom: I think you need to give serious thought to extending your trip by at least a month. I suspect that many of us will want to treat you to sights and hope that you stay a couple of days with us. I know husband Doug and I want to treat you to Route 66 and a few of our sights. Don't want to tell you what to do but just be very, very flexible. This is a trip of a lifetime and photos and blogs will allow some of us to vicariously live through you. Many of us wouldn't be able to make such a trip because of daily commitments. So, having said that just give us a few days heads up when you will be in our area. We will give you specific directions and yes will probably escort you to our home with Agatha and whoever else wants to come along. Looking forward to being a part of this great adventure.
 
Judy - great to hear from you. Your invitation sounds excellent, and just may kick me into spending an extra day or two in the area. The one non-flexible fact is that I have to be back at Sturbridge Village for the big Harvest in mid October. Your area looks like a beautiful part of the country, and I'd imagine there are some excellent drives. I'm just about to poke through National Geographic's "Scenic Highways and Byways" again, for the "sights and drives" along my route.

Excellent! I've been wanting to move for a while. Just don't wake me before 10:30 and I'm not a picky eater as long as it's good. :encouragement:
