My TR3 engine is out, the machine shop has not had time to fully evaluate the engine, but for sure the crankshaft is broken in two...So while I am waiting for the machinist's opinion, I would like to find out from you guys what my options and approximate costs might be for a replacement crank. Thanks!
 
I don't know of anyone making new ones at a reasonable price. There are a few racing crankshafts available (eg Moldex), but last I heard they were upwards of $7k ... probably $10k by now.

Fortunately, used originals should be relatively available. I haven't paid too much attention to current prices, but I think you should be able to find an original for well under $500, especially if it hasn't been reconditioned yet.

If you can't, write me off-list and maybe I'll pry one out of my hoard. I actually tried to give away an engine a few years back that had a good, never-turned crank in it, but got no takers. (But it's no longer available, now that I've found storage for it.)

Yep the last billet crank I bought from Moldex was back about 2004, and it was for MG/AH 948, and it was about $1800 retail, I'm sure other examples may be higher, but I agree with Bob, I doubt any new Moldex billet crank for one of our 4 cylinder engine would be over $3000, but that would be over kill for street engine. I'd say keep digging around to find a good used crank, this stuff doesn't grow on trees, but it's out there, if you really look, we snagged a GT6 crank last week off Ebay for a whopping $45 plus shipping, and the crank turned out to std./std. and a great piece, so deals are out there.

There are 4 TR3/4 crankshafts for sale on Ebay right now, some already been magnafluxed, and ground, ready to go, then a couple other unmolested std./std., but probably, or may need to be ground to .010/.010.

Update...The machinist has the engine apart; luckily only the crank broke and no other damage to any other part of the engine.
 
I suggest sending it off for nitriting(a hardening process).then machine,polish and balance.
The last tr motor I did had rods/pistols that were 30 grams different, this must be addressed
or it will break another crank.Lastly the flywheel needs to go on a diet and be balanced.I like 24 lbs as this was what the tr2 used with
good results.
