So I have wire wheels on my 4. They're not in great condition and I may have access to some minilites a buddy is selling shortly.
Am I right in saying that the wheel studs will be too short for the "solid" wheels? I have no spacers fitted.
If so, are the studs easily replaced and what length would I need?

Yes, the studs are too short. The front ones are easy and are the same as a TR6 - Moss, TRF and others will have them. The back ones are trickier, they are threaded in, and peened over. Do a search and I'm sure you'll find a topic or two covering how to swap out.

Would anyone happen to know the length of exposed stud thread for "solid" wheel studs?

Sorry don't have a direct answer for you - but when wire wheels are put on hubs which have the longer studs for steel wheels it is common to fit a 1/4" spacer to take up the extra length. So I would guess roughly 1/4" longer stud length and potentially a little more than that.

I'd carefully suggest that some wheels such as KN Minators have shoulder style lug nuts which potentially would work on the shorter studs - but you'd need confirmation from someone and/or direct measurement that you are gettting enough thread engagement there to safely use the shorter studs.

Most of the shoulder lug nuts wheels have not been made now for a couple of decades, everything today use the much better 60 degree taper design, like your modern car does. In fact these lug nuts for old wheels with shoulder lug nuts can be hard to find. I would avoid this at all cost.

Jim has also been calling me about this, amazing what you can find with 3 minutes worth of research. :)

Is this only an issue for knockoff wheels? Are the stud lengths from standard bolt-on wheels ok for bolt-on Minilite wheels?

I'm not quite sure what that "research" tells me though. Yes, there are different wheel studs for wire vs steel wheels. My question was whether the wire ones are shorter and if so whether they should not be used with minlites. Not convinced Moss tells me that :). The above replies and your email did.

Moss may not tell you that, but everybody else is. Yes, the wire wheel studs ARE SHORTER. They should not be used with anything other then the splined drive wire wheel adapters. They are shorter because the long ones would stick far enough to to hit the spokes on the wire wheels.

What's often done is to use a spacer (about 1/4" thick) behind the wire wheel adapter when using the longer studs so that that the spokes won't hit the longer studs. This way it's safe to swap wheels around.
