Background Noise

We drove to my in-laws yesterday in the Miata (top down).

While driving, I thought I heard a weird sound and wondered if I was getting a bad wheel bearing.
When we arrived and shut down the car, I could still hear the sound.
I sometime wear a hearing aid, so I instinctively checked to see if it was out of kilter.....when I realized I wasn't wearing it.

So what was the noise?

Cicadas!

Holy crow, those things are noisy!
We don't have them in my area of Morris County (NJ) and I've never even seen one, but they have arrived in eastern Morris County where my in-laws live.

~Cicada Info~

They haven't appeared in northern Connecticut yet, but we're waiting ...

Getting old enough to here that continual buzz heh?

"What other creature do you know of that goes into hibernation for 17 years and then comes out of the ground just to mate and die?" Rubin says

Uhhh, any man who's been married for at least that long? :jester:

You can keep em down there. I'll pass

We have annual ones here too, oddly enough though I haven't heard any yet this year. As a kid I used to love picking their sheds off of trees they made great monsters to attack hotwheels or G.I Joe. Nowadays I love to pick them up and stick one on my shoulder and walk by my wife, gets her every time.

 I didn't have either but what a great use for 'em. I prefered pickin' 'em up and scarin' the crap outta the dog with the noise. Nuthin' like the sound of those things, I love it.

Ya know, kids are always kinda hard on critters (many a "pet" frog or turtle hath perish'ed) but for some reason we'd always help 'em out if they were in a pinch. They're so slow and trusting you kinda have to.

Had a dog years ago that played with them. Would carry one around in her mouth for a long time. Far as I know she never actually ate one but that sure was a funny sound coming from a dog.

To me, it's not really summer until I hear that buzz.....for some reason, that's a happy childhood trigger....go figure.....
