clunk on braking.

I have been getting a soft clunk from the rear when I apply brakes even lightly. (Not coming from junk in the boot) I have been trying to track this down for 3 or 4 years. It is not the damper (shocks) tightness. I have replaced the leaf springs. Replaced one wheel (for rotational movement). Replaced hubs. Replaced master and wheel cylinders. Good, tight brakes and even application when stopping. Any thoughts?

Stream of consciousness:
What about a rear cylinder sliding in its slot. Is axle hole properly seated on leaf spring bolt. Spare tire mount shifting. battery shifiting. Panhard rod bushings. Rear trans mount bushings. exhaust mount. Maybe brake shoes are sticking - lube pivots and where they seat on the cylinder. Try holding tension on brakes with e-brake handle when braking. Is there a sound?
Rear radius arm mounts to axle or chassis - are the holes oval? try removing the radius arms. fuel pump mount.

When you say it happens with a light application of brakes, I would look closely at the rear brakes. Are the backing plates secure? Any signs of shoes or cylinders sliding?

Try applying the handbrake only as you move slowly forward. Then try it in reverse. See if there's a difference. Then you can add a bit of hand brake and some pedal and listen. Good luck, Bob

One other thing you may want to check along with the other suggestions listed from other members, Are your U Joints in good order? Many times when accelerating or deceleration if you have worn Ujoints you will hear and feel a clunk...
