We - Calgary - did a video of that latest craze, the Harlem Shake... I went down - unofficially - to take photos and there was one other guy who was also floating around doing much the same thing I was doing, unofficially...

Guess who got the glory :mad-new: he got home first apparently, did his edits before I had barely even started on them (I decided to go grocery shopping on the way home, well... I did have to sometime that day), I got through five photos then had another event for the evening before I posted anymore... Everyone is ignoring my photos of the event, meantime a media website showed ten of his photos for their article, he probably didn't get paid for it, but still... I'm just steamed right now, upset, was going to finish off my edits tonight before bed and get them posted now I almost don't know if I feel like it, no one is going to pay attention anyway... Why bother... :rolleyes2:

James,

Please take a deep breath,& look at things when you calm down.
You're an Icon here,if that's of any help.
The new age isn't about the right people getting attention.I feel
for you,but high tech,to me,isn't the real world.

I'm in no way suggesting the other guy did anything intentionally, I met him and he's a very nice guy just doing his thing... I just feel a lack of motivation all of a sudden (at least related to this event)

No no no, anger is a gift!

Pi$$ed off? GREAT! Now focus that anger on turning out the best artist in you.

From one artist to another, a little honesty is due here. I'm gonna tell you like I would a life-long friend so bare with me.

Ya know who got the attention they deserved?

..him..

Ya wanna know why?

...because it meant more to him than it did to you.

How can I say that?

Well, I didn't; you did: "he got home first apparently, did his edits before I had barely even started on them (I decided to go grocery shopping on the way home, well... I did have to sometime that day)"

By your own admission, other things took precedence. He was more concerned with his work than anything else. That's what tends to get you recongized.

You both received the proper reward for your actions, nothing more...nothing less

Olympians who win gold medals don't show up late for practice or leave early. The only most dedicated tend to get top honors...as they should.

(Last time I checked, they weren't giving out medal for laziness.....or I'd have plenty. :grin:smile:

All in all, it's no big deal, it's just one event. It's a lesson learned, nothing more.

With the media speed is everything. That's why it's called "the news" and and not "the olds". Pics of "old news" will never get published no matter how good they are.

Your generation has been given a gift beyond measure; the computer age. Never before has a generation been given such power or voice, much less the speed at which it can be used. Don't waste it, use it to your advantage; clearly he did.

Make a plan to edit and post a.s.a.p. Make it your goal to have him scratching his head wondering how you got your pics edited and posted so quickly.

He's now known to be dedicated and fast...

...you get out there and be known as the guy who get pics of things before they even happen

NEWSFLASH: Uhhh, yes he did. Why else you think he posted them so quickly? He knew you were there doing the same thing, right?

Like it or not, he's your competition... and needs to be viewed as such.

Be nice and friendly but he's the competition, that is, if this is important to you.

There are people around you who have no food, no money, no place to live.
There are people around you who can't walk, speak or recognize the faces of the people they loved.
There are children around you who have to live with whoever will take them in because they have no family to call their own.
You have nothing worth complaining about
You will survive being bested!.

Yeah... I'm a self confessed luddite at times, not a huge fan of social media, only on it due to necessity, I'm too private of a person to fully embrace it, times like this I struggle with my thoughts on Facebook, Twitter, etc...

Same here although times like this you SHOULDN'T post thoughts like this on facebook etc. Here is o.k though.

I recently had a conversation with someone 14 years yonger than me. I had no idea folk was hip (Mick's thread started the discussion),"retro hippie" (or whatever it's called) was in nor that pallets in any form other than pallets were hot. Oh,I learned facal hair was big now too and something called an esty. I too expressed my disdain to all things social media, however; it was pointed out to me to either adapt or get left behind...

...and ya know what....she was right...

This is especially true for you seeing you're younger. You'll need to cater to your generation for a longer period of time. Don't get a social media account as you, get it as a business/artist. I'vee been doing some research on habits of highly sucessful people. In ever case, they've all embraced change and techincal advancement and used them to their advantage. I don't know where you're posting these things to get picked up by the media, but it sounds like an opportunity that has never been available beore to any other generation of photographers. That would seem to level the playing field for aspiring photographers that wish to get there work out and possibly be picked up for a full time gig.

Dude, look at Bieber, from youtube to your tube overnight...

He wasn't bested, he beat himself.

It has never been: "Find your niche"... rather it has been: "MAKE your niche!"

One lesson learned at an early age(17) when covering a basketball game 'officially' for a local rag, was administered by a competing and otherwise friendly fellow photog. Older and with a competing paper. At a lay-up opportunity by the "home team star" to win the game, he used an elbow to jostle my camera arm... his shot was put front-page of their paper. Mine was of another play and buried back in the sports section. He apologized RIGHT after he'd done it but I got the idea... subsequently I got many of my sports pix on half-page features. You can be friendly, but(!) remember: "Trust everybody... but cut the cards!"

Be quick, adapt.
