Not an expert, but I do have Bill Piggott's book.

His numbers for TR8 production:

1979 (Fixed head)
Home market - 63 (Doubtful - mainly competition and development cars)
Export - 141

1980 (Convertible)
Home market - 9
Export - 2088

1981 (Convertible)
Home market - 9
Export - 405

Definitely different from the numbers you have. Piggott's quote: "...arriving at exact total production figures for the TR7/8 family is difficult." His resource was BMIHT, "...using original factory build records..."

The book I have was copyrighted 2009.

So Piggott is saying only 141 fixed head TR8 coupes were made?

Aside from the 63 for the home market... Unless it's a misprint in the book (Original TR).

Those numbers may not be taking into account the preproduction coupes. There were a few with VINs starting ACN000... made in the first half of 77. There were another 100 or so made in the summer of 77 that had VINs starting ACN1.... Then there were the cars we call 79s that had VINs that started TCN15.... Most of these were titled as 80s even though they were built in 78. Then the production 80 coupes were TCN16.... There is alot of speculation about some of the early cars being revinned later on as TCN cars, so some of the production numbers may have the same car counted twice. I own ACN0008 which has a build date of Jan 77 and also own TCN 161036 which was one of the last ones built.

400 sounds about right. I think Macdonald in Canada has info on around 200 of them, but he's only been trying to track them down over the last 10 years or so. Who knows how many disappeared before anybody thought to track them. I once went to go look at a TR8 convertible for sale. It was red, and from the pictures I saw beforehand, it screamed 79 TR7. When I got there, it was indeed a 79 TR7 that someone had swapped all of the TR8 stuff into including the TR8 coupe VIN. After I called the guy out, the car seemed to vanish. That was 20 years ago, and I've never seen the car again. It was a very nice car, just wrong. Somewhere out there, someone thinks they have a red TR8 convertible, but what they really have is a TR7 convertible with a TR8 coupe VIN. Can't say for sure, but I think it's this car, which keeps popping up for sale. Over the last 5 years plus, I've seen it for sale in NY and Cali several times. If this isn't the car I'm thinking of, I apologize.

Without. I am looking primarily for US delivered cars.

My objective is a clean, distinct production tally showing just how few, and rare, a true TR8 really is. In TR production numbers the TR8 is quite small...few at the car shows I attend really understand that. Hence the chart.

1962 – 1980 Spitfire………314,332

Can that spitfire number really be right??

They had 18 years of production to get there!

BTW, just watched the Spitfire episode of Wheeler Dealers last night. Still cracking up at the sight of Edd driving it, with practically his whole head above the windscreen!

So these numbers seem pretty accurate?

Wonder just how many TR8's still exist?
