TR4/4A Another wiper motor thread - TR4A

I'm refreshing the wiper motor. When I was pulling the end cover from the motor case, out fell a single long cardboard tube and a piece of fiber insulation, flat, shaped like an E but with 4 prongs, about 2" long. I'm guessing the tube insulates one of the long case bolts - but why only one? I have no clue where the E should go. Anyone know?

On the positive side, the brushes and armature look great, as does the drive gear, so after I know how to reassemble correctly, cleaning and a fresh coat of paint and this bit is ready.

The little card board is the spacer for the arms that hold the brushes.....a little spring pulls the arms against the armature.
The card board is the pivot for this fragile bit.I suggest that if it is not damaged now, you should treat it with something to preserve the
little begger. A drop of crazy glue or polyester resin.I have seen a number of these crumble as you try to re-assemble...

I just finished that task on my TR4 and didn't run into a sleeve covering one of the two long housing screw. Any chance you have a photo? Here are some of mine if it helps. Thanks.

Very Pretty! I don't have good luck with wrinkle paint. It comes out fine, but does not hold up to even light bumps. Has anyone tried putting a clear coat over the paint?

Thanks! That's actually wrinkle black powder coating. I don't have luck with any rattle can paint. I finally gave up trying. I started powder coating ~7 years ago and haven't look back since.

Thanks, Tim. Your 5th and 6th pictures show that E-shaped piece clearly. As far as the tube, it exactly covers the shaft of the case bolt, so I'm guessing there were 2 originally, and that they aren't critical to the motor's operation.

I'll make you an offer - I'll trade you my wiper motor including the tube for that nice looking unit of yours

Glad the pics helped. I'll use heat shrink on those long case screws.

I'm sure your unit looks great. Keepin' these great little cars alive is very rewarding at time! Good Luck!

4A should be a two speed motor, vs. the one speed on the 4 as pictured. I wonder if that makes a difference.

Not to the little E-shaped insulator.

But what the heck is the trick to get the rubber bushes back into the holes in the bracket? My fingers are sore already.

They are a bear to get in. I used a bit air tool oil to help lube it up. Hang in there, it is possible to get them in.
