Busy day - demolition

JP,

We're redoing our 2nd "half" bathroom - does anyone enjoy these projects?
Stuff is taking up space in the garage - I can't wait until it's gone.
"tlthorne" - I think you hit a nerve with Don,as this is/was his area of expertise.
(That means that he knows his stuff!).

- Doug

Are we done yet, JP?!?

Doug, how did I do that???? or should I say Don? how did I do that? I didn't realize I had thrown anyone but the ceo of the wallpaper corp under the bus..... yes that is the bus backing to run over a few more times.... right now 4 weeks behind, no one scheduled this week so it will be 5 weeks Friday.
JP ours isn't much bigger! getting a new 26" door, old was 24", dropped the vent size from 4" c.i. to 3" pvc to gain 2" width which is now 47" , but our tub / shower is set into wall, could have knocked out a closet to make it bigger, but then no place for clothes in the small bedroom. House was built / finished in 1938, old house burnt in 1936, some of the other buildings are timber framed somewhere around 1860-1900.
oh what fun old houses are!

Are we done yet, JP?!?

I hate you Doc! Back to the bath in just a minute - but, at least we are constructing not destructing now!

Downhill run!!!

We're still in the "con" stage here.... "money" is our constraint, you're ahead of th' game!

If we were neighbors, I'd BE there to help. Honestly.

I know you would. Actually I could have my son here helping but the room is so small I suspect it would be even slower. Finished at midnight. Subfloor in and ready. Had to seal around the edges as you could see down into the garage below in many places - very bizarre, but, hopefully spray foam insulation will cut down on drafts. Tomorrow we insulate and drywall! Onward through the fog!

After my last house (which I built almost single-handidly), I swore I was done with "home work".
But when I bought our "new" house a few years ago, I wanted to re-do two of the bathrooms.
In the end, I did all the plumbing, cabinets, trim, mirrors, sheetrock repair and painting, but I paid a buddy to do the floor tile (my knees ain't what they used to be).
In the end, these "sweat equity" jobs always worthwhile in terms of energy savings and pride of ownership.
The toughest thing about your's is being on a tight schedule.

I grew up in a small ranch house, the oldest of seven children. The house had one bathroom.
I remember once when my Dad remodeled the bathroom over one weekend. Everyone stood around constantly asking him, "Is it done yet?" :highly_amused:

well, I had hoped for a little more progress but can't complain. Got it insulated, vapour barrier, drywall up and 1/2 way through my first coat of mud when I called it a night. Probably should have called it a night sooner looking at the mud job I'm doing. :wall:

 Always takes longer when ya gotta 'compensate' for the stuff you do while in a fatigue daze... but at least drywall mud sands easy! Not like messin' up concrete and having the evidence in place fer centuries. :jester:

Shoulda done it in the summer JP that way the tennant could have showered outside with the hose (like my oldest boy did when I did ours in the spring) and I hadn't opened the pool yet. The rest of us however paid $2.50 to go to the pool in Aurora where we swam for an hour and had 2 showers a day

mehheh... told Mitsy she'd need to go out back and I'd hold th' hose pipe on her. :smirk:

She drew th' line over th' slit trench, tho.

So, why am I browsing the forum at 1:38 am? Why that would be because we just finished laying tile in the apartment. This morning I primed the walls before church. Two coats of paint after. Finished the plumbing (supply side) no leaks. Installed the shower pan and Mrs. JP is the star installer and I am the cutter. So grout tomorrow, Ikea for vanity and finish shower walls and she she be in tomorrow nite. Knock wood. BTW, it amazes me how much stuff is listed as DIY that requires pretty specialized tools. Fortunately i have lots of tools!

Tools are never an issue here, it's the ambition/motivation wot's in short supply. Got th' green board for the non-plumbing walls the other day, replaced the hinged door 'twixt bed and bath with a pocket door.

Well, done at Midnight today so, we're improving! Didn't get started till about 2pm. Had to get stuff at Ikea as well as Home Depot. Had to put in the trim before the fixtures. Had borrowed a lousy chop saw - but, nothing Caulk won't fix. On the other hand I got my nailer back and it made very short work of the trim. So, storage cupboard assembled and installed. Toilet reinstalled (Including a second trip to home depot for a drill to attach the flange to the tile. (and a special file to cut back the tile a bit to make the flange fit - doh!) Got the shower installed. The only thing not was the vanity. Did the dry fit and the water pipes need to be moved about an inch. Needs 4 90 degree pieces and I could find 3 - grrr. Anyway, tomorrow. Last job as SWMBO cleaned the apartment (Oh my was there dust!) was to connect the shower drain. If anything it went together easier than the original - go figure. Of course, while I tested everything, I walked through the garage and heard that tell-tale drip-drip-drip. My heart sank as it was the shower in the first place. Turned out I hadn't tightened the trap cleanout - phew. Anyways, not quite complete - a bit more drywall but, habitable and the rest I can do on my time. Hopefully pics tomorrow.

Well done JP and Mrs JP, you will soon be able to take a well deserved rest

Congrats of the completion, we got another batch of w/p, funny the w/p lady says I know what to look for (oh boy) so I opened the 1st one carefully rolled it just as she did on the table. "bleep" so I looked at the other 2 rolls hard to see but! it looks like when they seal the plastic bag where the side seam meets the end seams that is where the lump forms!
