TR4/4A TR4A IRS VIN differences

Just looked at nice 67 TR4A IRS with O/D..........VIN on the ownership had the CTC designation.....The car had the Commission number painted over....unreadable and the Body number which was also painted but partly readable didn't correspond to the VIN and only had the CT designation for a solid axle car.......is it possible the convert a solid axle car to IRS or could the body be from a donor car...........i'm trying to figure this out this out as the car is beautiful but obviously something is amiss.......The owner has had the car for 15 years and he claims to have bought it like this

Yes, it would have been quite easy to convert between IRS and live axle. I think the donor body is a more likely scenario.

I'm not sure what you mean about body number corresponding to the VIN? Body numbers will seldom (maybe never) match the commission numbers, and I don't think the body number prefixes differed between IRS and solid axle; only the commission number would. Is that body number reasonably close to the commission number? If so, probably everything's fine.

As for conversion, I think it's not that easy to convert either way, but it's probably a bit easier to convert from IRS to solid axle than to go the other way.

The commission number is engraved so some wiping with a solvent (lacquer thinner?) should reveal the number.

Under the circumstances the owner should do this -- I know I would be relluctant to buy a car if I couldn't match the title with the number on the car. For one thing, in many states the DMV/BMV/MVD/BVD is going to want to see the number.
 
Sorry i meant the body number corresponds to a solid axle car CT and not the IRS with the CTC so i was wondering if it were converted or just a donor body
 
On an IRS TR4A, the commission number will start with CTC, but the body number would still be CT.

Darrel and Andy both have it. Here are my numbers for example which are original as confirmed with BMHIT certificates for both cars:

1966 Triumph TR4A

  • VIN: CTC69123L
  • Body: 68668CT
  • Engine: 69238E

1966 Triumph TR4A

  • VIN: CTC72159LO
  • Body: 71922CT
  • Engine: 72497E

I agree with Scott, Darrel and Andy. As you can see from the VINs provided by Scott, the second C indicates IRS, the L is for Left Hand Drive, and the O is for overdrive. My car, CTC60653L, is IRS, Left drive and no overdrive from the factory, although I put an OD transmission in it in 1984. The body number is different, as is the engine number.
