No....not for me (yet)

Hi guys, I don't know much about TR8's other than the fact that I would like one some day...

Are the TR7 and TR8 Gas Caps different? Do they differ through the years on a TR8?

I have a local Club member in need of one and I would like to find one for him as a thank you for all his service to our local Triumph Club.

So, where can I find one? Available new/repro or does someone have a good used on for sale?

Cheers,
Tush

No difference between TR7 and TR8 really, but the earlier FCH cars had a larger cap, later DHC (and I believe later FHC) used a smaller cap. Since all TR8s are DHC (except for the early development prototypes), the small cap would be correct.

I think there is a VW cap that looks similar, and will fit (perhaps with a little filing of the tabs), but I can't find the reference for that at the moment.

Thanks Darrell, I do know that this TR8 is a DHC, although, I almost bought a FHC once....

So, I should just look for the smaller TR7/TR8 Cap.

Anyone out there have a good spare to part with?

Cheers,
Tush

I had to do this dance myself with mine. I didn't know it was a FHC/DHC thing, I just thought it was an early/late version cap. In any case, the cap is NLA. I believe YKC3397 is the correct one. TKC3976 from a late 80's Range Rover fits/seals but doesn't look right. I see these guys list the 3397 part https://www.jamespaddock.co.uk/parts.aspx?categoryID=9&vehicleId=7 I got one off a junk car but if I had held onto the car longer I was going to need to continue this quest. Seems like one of the usual suspects had a non-OE locking cap that had the clover leaf look to it but I can't remember who it was.

YUUUP, $40 plus shipping. (believe it or not, that's cheap for a TR8 gas cap) Many people have driven off and left them behind at the gas station over the years. I even did this once on a 500 mile trip. Came back 3 days later and it was still sitting on top of the gas pump where I left it. Send me a PM with your address if you want one.

When the made the DHC, there wasn't enough room for the bigger cap they originally used on the FHC. I think when they did the DHC, they also went to the smaller cap on the FHC, but certainly good to check if you have FHC.

Dave- I have an extra one packed away ready for shipping to the new home.
Though, as you can see, they are like hen's teeth.
Don't know if I want to chance giving it away as I already lost my original

Dave - I was in a salvage yard a few weeks back in Ottawa grabbing some seat belts to use as webbing for my top refurb and saw a TR7/8 on the lot. Might be worth a call to see what it was and if they have the right part. If they don't ship, I'm likely back at Thanksgiving and can grab it for you.

It's union auto parts:

Thanks guys. I have an email into a local guy that is breaking a car for parts so I will see if he is willing to part with the cap.

If not, I will be back

Cheers

I know that the locking cap that I bought from Moss doesn't fit, even though it looks like it should.

Found the reference for possible substitutions:

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:]87-90 4 door Range Rover, Cap is cosmetically different, but seal is identical to the small cap TR8.

Also 1980 Rover 3500 SD1.

Indications are that a cap off a 1970’s Volkswagon Rabbit, while not perfect cosmetically, does seal the tank.[/QUOTE]

Todd, do you have a picture of the differences between the small and the larger caps? You're the only one here who would have access to both.

The large cap looks like the small cap.
Only larger

Actually, the small cap looks like the large cap, only smaller

Pictured on a 9X11 sheet of paper for scale. The larger caps are solid plastic. The smaller caps have a foam skirt around them, or at least they did originally. Note the factory locking big cap. Pretty cool eh? The smaller caps have two locking tangs and the bigger caps have three.
