TR2/3/3A Strange metallic scraping noise when out for a drive.....

I was enjoying a spirited drive at speed the other day in the TR3 when I heard a loud metallic scraping sound that only lasted briefly then went away? A few miles later I heard it again. Very puzzling since the car is behaving normally and has never ran so well. I cant tell whether it's coming from the front or the back. I suppose I should have a look at the front brakes although there is no indication of a brake problem. Has this happened to anyone else?

might be a loose brake shoe?

might be a loose brake shoe?
It occurs to me that I did have trouble mounting the transmission inspection plate when I installed it. I couldn't access that last bolt towards the passenger side? Maybe I even left it off? Possibly the plate is rubbing the flywheel ring gear. Have to crawl underneath to have a look but the driving season here is over in a few days so probably a winter or Spring project.

Maybe you put it on backwards - although that usually results in a scraping sound all the time.
It's interesting that you mention that. For some reason the inspection plate on my car was curved around the outer edges and when fitted with the curved part towards the gearbox it fit flush but apparently as far as I could figure in order to keep the raised portions that are pressed into the inner part of the plate from hitting the pan I would have to mount it with the curved edge toward the front of the car so the raised inner parts ould not hit the ring gear. Hope that makes sens? Maybe a PO somewhere along the 70 year age of the car modified the plate but I have never had a close look at another one to see? Did you have any issues mounting the inspection plate bolt closest to the passenger side of the gearbox?

Most scraping noises are found to be brake related. I would first check the
front brake dust shields.

Good idea. I had a bad experience years ago concerning front brakes. I think I must have misadjusted the front brake MC stop bolt causing the front brakes to stay on.(Apperantly the stop bolts were discontinued in 59??) Did not notice anything right away but when I got out on the highway at speed all of a sudden the car pulled violently to the left and I had to wrestle it the side of the highway. The brakes had locked up and snapped one of hold down "ears" on the left brake caliper and the left wheel tilted 30% inward. Smelled smoke....got out and looked underneath and burning grease at both sides near the wheels! I threw gravel on the flames and put the fires out. Could have been a lot worse. What an adrenaline rush.
