SU HD8 Needle & Seat Gasket

Velox

Jedi Hopeful
Online
67 BJ8 on my SU HD8 carbs I am installing new Viton needle and seat pairs from Moss Motors. There are no gaskets provided that fit under the seat. One of my carbs had a gasket, and the other did not. Are they needed?

One video online reported no gaskets are needed, but online searching also reports gaskets are required.

Thanks for any info on this!

Thanks Goldie. Several online videos on HD8 carb rebuilding show no gaskets under the needle seat. For some reason one of my carbs had a gasket there. My conclusion at this point is that no gasket is used in that location.

Did you remove the carbs or just removing the lid to get to the valve. I had a heck of a time getting that rear carb of my 1967 BJ8. There was one bolt that was just really hard to get a wrench on. A very bad design in my opinion.

I did not remove the carbs. I suspected a float problem and just removed the lids, then the floats. I found one of the brass floats quarter full of gasoline. I was installing new needle/seat kits when I noted the gasket under one of the seats. From inspecting the carbs it looks like a very difficult task removing the rear one, glad I did not have to go that route!
