It’s a pretty simple mechanism. Does the latch still rotate a full 1/4 turn moving the two rods outward? Assuming they are both still in place, are the little plates that the 2 rods slide into lined up correctly?

Usually, just cleaning, lubricating, and adjusting is enough. Replacement is rarely needed unless the latch or striker is broken.
