I had no idea. This is a terrible tragedy, he was a brilliant director. I just watched the second Spinal Tap this past weekend.

A terrible loss - a very talented man.

(And I'm so old, I remember his father, Carl Reiner!)

from a Reddit post:

In the pandemic, there was a multi-celeb-made reading/reenactment of The Princess Bride. In the final scene, Rob plays the boy being read the story, while the person playing the grandfather would have been recording it elsewhere. Rob had not been told that in the final scene, the grandfather would be played by his real father, legendary Carl Reiner. Carl Reiner died before Rob found out about this, and the footage came as a posthumous surprise. Not only was his last message from his dad him paying tribute to his sons work as a peer, but he spoke the last line to camera, to Rob: “As you wish.”

From the film: “That day, she was amazed to discover that when he was saying 'As you wish,' what he meant was, 'I love you.'

Carl was a genius writer!

I did not agree with a lot of his political activities, but I really respected his integrity. He was very serious about his political views but he also vigorously defended the rights of others to disagree with him. Respect for others is getting hard to find today. His talent in the entertainment industry was impressive in many ways.

I don’t want this topic to get political which is why I have only talked about his brilliance as a director. I did, however, recently watch an interview with James Wood, who, let’s just say, was on the opposite side of the spectrum from Reiner, and Wood was talking about how, despite their differences, were good friends.
