hey, i actually have 2 questions. the first one is, i'm getting a power reading from the pos. and neg side of the coil, couls a short in the coil cause this? #2 does anyone know the gap for the pick up coil? oh yeah, one more what's the deal with the ignition conversion kits, they any good? I'm trying to fix this ignition system for a while now, she has all original lucas "crap". I ain't gettin nothin out her anymore. I bought her about a month ago non-running, i was getting her to hit, then i change the spark plugs and she just quit. I'm dying to get her running. i wondering if i should just replace everything. the only thing i have replaced so far is the plugs, and control module. Can't be that much help with the last two. (not that familiar with the Lucas(OPUS) ignition system.
#1 amounts to a generic question. Virtualy all ignition systems are the same in this regard... There are different methods for implimenting it but they all switch the ground side to fire the coil. So, except when the coil is being fired (points closed on a convetional system) the coil is floating and if you check either side to ground you should get battery voltage.

or in other words... this is normal.

I don’t know much about these coil setups. I have a 1989 Jaguar XJS V12 and my ground has about 1.6-1.7 volts going to it? I had one coil overheat and melt. Was that a fluke in the coil and not from ground having power? Also forgive me. I see this post is over 20years old. But I was excited to see an issue similar to mine.
