TR6 New Ammeter Install Question

Greetings All. I wanted to get some last minute confirmation on wiring a new ammeter on my TR6. It appears I need to attach the (N) wire from the starter to the positive side of the meter. Two (NW) wires would attach to the negative side of the meter. One larger one goes to the alternator and the smaller goes to the ignition. Is this correct? I was not sure about which pole to connect. My wiring diagram does not specify +/-. Thanks for any help.

My 74 TR6 has a volt meter. In College I had a 63 Corvair with a generator that I added an ammeter to. I think the voltmeter is the better and safer way to go.

This is largely a matter of definition. If you want the ammeter to read charge current (which is what I think it should indicate) then the BW wire from the control box should be on the positive terminal. If you want it to read system current, it's the other way around. If you get it wrong, it's not going to hurt anything; just reverse the connections.
 
Bob, Thanks for your reply. Yes, the majority of the folks with ammeters seem to have swapped over to voltmeters. My original ammeter failed and I automatically replaced it with an aftermarket one since the Lucas guages are not available. In retrospect, a voltmeter would have been the better choice. Thanks for your input.
 
Sarastro, Thanks for your help. Yes, I wired this thing with the NW wire to positive I have not fired the car up yest since my interior is still out but hope to be finished with it tomorrow. It was certainly a challenge trying to work the rear of the panel with big hands reaching between the choke cable and the heater cable. I'm glad there were no kids around to witness my language.
