Note also, that many of today's laptops have more than one USB port. One of the ports usually has a "lightning bolt symbol" next to it, showing that it provides extra power for external devices.
Well, happy news! I ran my Mini-Tool-Shadow maker program, which I forgot I had, and it corrected the problem on both drives. Mini-Tool found and exposed the external drives and they were totally wiped clean! It formatted each drive and after a re-boot, the drives showed up. The Mini-Tool program I have is only the basic edition and not the free version, but it solved the problem! Thanks for all the suggestions.
