I ran an Internet speed test and it came out 40mps download and 50mps upload, Is this average or slow? PJ :unsure:

cable is typically asymmetrical. Ours tested at 370 Mbit/sec down and 12 Mbit/sec up. Could go to fiber that has the same upload and download speeds, as high as 1 Gbit/sec.
 
Hi Paul - in an earlier post you wrote that you bought the basic service which is 100 mbps. You mentioned that before you switched, the speed was 10 to 15 mbps, after the switch "it pegs the 100 mark".

So I think your 40/50 is pretty slow for what you're paying for.
 
Yeah thanks, Tom, I have to call the company and find out what's going on. It's a new fiber system they've been working on for the past 4 years and have had some problems to iron out. Local company, so easy to get to. (y)
 
After talking to the fiber optic company, my last speed test came out to 78.5, quite an improvement, I'm happy with that for now. (y)
 
If you are paying for 100 and getting 78.5 that is in the acceptable range. The contracts are always written "up to 100" in any case.
There is also a huge difference what device you are using to measure on. My work computer which I can connect directly with a wire usually does a tiny bit better than the "promised" 300.. my wife's laptop on the same cable a bit less. Cellphones on Wifi.. all over the place - and not surprisingly a huge difference depending on where in the house we are.
 
Ours is 95, give-or-take, up and down. Fiber, the "company" router/modem set up as a simple bridge going thru a firewall appliance. Class-C LAN behind that. No disappointment here. Wireless is somewhat less, the WiFi router is also behind the 'wall.
 
There was a website once where it measured your input and output speeds.
Anyone know if that is still around?
 
Speedtest.net You can tell them your location so they can find the best server for lower lag times.

They tested at 6.17 Mbit/sec down and 0,69 Mbit/sec up.
I guess I need to fix that.
