WEBP files?

More and more when I find an image (public domain, no copyright) to share on BCF, the file format is WEBP.

WEBP isn't accepted by BCF for upload or for linking, so you have to convert it to JPG, PNG, etc.

Is there a way to directly use WEBP files on BCF? Or to have BCF accept WEBP images?

Thanks.
Tom M.

The short answer is no.

From a discussion of WebP format from a quick randon search:

"Despite being developed for roughly seven years, the WebP format doesn’t enjoy widespread support. Many of the most common image manipulation tools like Adobe Photoshop do not natively recognize WebP. Some programs (like Photoshop) get around this incompatibility with third-party plugins. However, some programs simply fail to recognize the WebP format at all. This makes the WebP format a bit of a pain to work with. Fortunately, there is a way to convert WebP images into a format that does play nice with others."

However, there appears to be an easy workwaround (I have not tried this):

It works! I'd been using irfanview to convert, but the "howtogeek" idea is simpler and faster. I'll keep trying it.

Thanks!
