It's been a while since I visited DC, but last time I was there:

MLK-1.jpg

MLK: "After that [1944] summer in Connecticut, it was a bitter feeling going back to segregation. It was hard to understand why I could ride wherever I pleased on the train from New York to Washington and then had to change to a Jim Crow car at the nationโ€™s capital in order to continue the trip to Atlanta. The first time that I was seated behind a curtain in a dining car, I felt as if the curtain had been dropped on my selfhood. I could never adjust to the separate waiting rooms, separate eating places, separate rest rooms, partly because the separate was always unequal, and partly because the very idea of separation did something to my sense of dignity and self-respect."

Nichelle Nichols, Uhura on Star Trek, had decided she wanted to leave the series to pursue other interests. As she told the story, it was Dr King who, upon hearing she was planing to leave ST, convinced her to stay because he told her having a black woman as an officer on a star ship was too important. (King was apparently a big Trekkie)

It's kind of interesting to me that we have a statue of MLK
here in Roanoke, even though he never visited here.
I think that if a lot of people who are talking about
"Equality between races" followed his teachings, there
wouldn't be the problems there are today. It was all about
treating each other equally.

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me.
