Happily this hasn't happened to me! But his misfortune did make me laugh -- mostly in the I'm glad that's not me tone.

Oh and for anyone thinking a stud finder would have helped... probably not. Magnetic detectors cant find a plastic pipe in a concrete brick wall! Only way to avoid this is to know where piping / wiring is likely to be and not drill there. Probably if he had looked carefully at both sides of the wall he would have found evidence like a crack / variation in the wall thickness..
 
What's to complain? Now they've got a semi-automatic child, furniture, and floor washer!
 
I once drilled into a 110v wire while I was installing Bose Home Theater speakers in the living room. I thought for sure there couldn't possibly be wires running in the location I was drilling. I was wrong.
 
I can't see twitter content but based on the postings assume someone drilled into their water pipe. If they ran the pipes before putting up the drywall there wouldn't even be any visual clues. I had a friend who found someone had run an excessively long drywall screw right into their copper hot water line - didn't leak until 2 years after they bought the house.

Also had a friend one time who did their own plumbing - did a real nice job with all copper line, sweat-solder joints. Looked great, didn't leak. Then they flushed the commode and realized they had put the fill valve tee into the hot water line......its not supposed to steam when you flush.
 
When our house was built, I photographed all the plumbing and wiring, which was quite extensive, before the sheetrock was installed. I've used them a few times and they were a blessing to behold! (y)
