A Turkey Tale

We bought a new GE oven this summer as our original finally gave up after 30 years. The new oven is wifi enabled meaning it will download updates as they become available. A couple of days ago the screen on the oven let me know that a new update was downloaded and asked me if I want to install it "Now" or "Later".
I installed it and forgot about it. Yesterday, my wife made a cake and set the timer for 40 mins. We were both in the kitchen when we heard a loud "gobble, gobble, gobble". My wife asked "what is that?" I told her "it was the TV" but I wasn't confident that it was.
As it turned out, the download was a new sound when the oven timer is complete. We both had a good laugh. :ROFLMAO:

Gobble, Gobble

ME TOO!!

I was cooking dinner last night - and told my daughter there is a turkey in our backyard. “It’s really close!” We went to the back door, but did not see a turkey. “It sounds like it is inside the house!”

Yes, a good laugh was had by all. Unfortunately my potatoes were a bit dark because I had no idea it was the oven timer…🤣

I already went into the settings and deselected the “turkey timer”.
Is yours also a GE?

Just out of my insatiable curiosity ... did GE notify you of what the update included? Seems a bit weird for an appliance to download something with no details of what it is, then ask if it should be installed.

And of course ... does an oven really need an update!?!

Seems everything else just downloads stuff, and may or may not ask if you want it. With all the household stuff becoming "smart", maybe someday your thermostat will say "hey, it's hot want me to hit the A/C button?"....

or ... your household stuff is listening to you and "sharing" what it learns.

To your first question, the oven asked me before downloading. Silly me - I clicked “yes” without thinking.

Does an oven need updates? No. However, I admit - and I never thought I would say this - I like being able to control my oven from my phone! Given it takes about 15 minutes to preheat, I can turn the oven on when leaving work, 15 minutes later when I’m home the oven is ready to go. Similarly, it is nice to have a remote timer: if I’m in the basement or garage and making cake, my phone will buzz when it’s ready.

Strange new world. The surveillance camera in the oven collecting my habits of what I cook is a bit weird… I’m kidding - no such thing in my oven!!!

The screen said something about Thanksgiving dinner but that's all of the info given. What peeved me was that the only choice I was given was "Install Now" or "Install Later".

hmmm - if I stick a turkey in the oven, and after a while the oven goes "gobble gobble" ... I'd think the turkey is quite done yet.

Are you really certain it does NOT have a hidden camera?

Well if you see a guy in his Jockey shorts on the internet reheating some leftovers then there is a possibility mine has a hidden camera. Just saying.

Or it could start sending you ads based on what it sees you do, or don't, "Do you mop the floor as often as you should?? Check into the new Cleanit 9000 super mop with spring fragrance addons. Your kitchen can smell of freshly mown grass, beautiful spring flowers or spring rain for up to a week"....

What if someone is home doing something with the oven while you ask it to turn on?
Does it know if there is anything inside that will melt or catch fire.
I know of a few times someone turned on the oven and fried something inside.

Valid concern. This is something to be aware of; common sense still applies. (Only put things that can get hot in an oven. No younger brothers, for example. Yes, I’ve reheated last nights scraps a few times, for example.)

We're getting closer and closer to the point I move off grid.

I do have the option to disable the wifi to the oven (which I initially did). I haven’t found any need to control the oven via my iPhone. The only reason I’m keeping the oven on wifi is in case there are any substantial updates.

I'm not criticizing you. I'm just amazed at the way our society has gone, especially in regards to technology. I grew up in a house where my dad preferred less bells and whistles in anything he owned because the more options you had the more things there were to break. Your old oven lasted decades with just heating elements and rheostats. In order to remain competitive the new oven needs to be wifi enabled and to me that seems pointless. Why does an oven need the internet, why does it need updates? It just seems like they are adding more things to break rather than building a better product at this point. Of course, I'm way behind the curve here because I'm still using a gas oven.

No worries, I know that no criticism intended. All your points are well taken and I agree with you. Yes, our old oven lasted 30 years and I never needed, wanted nor imagined a wifi enabled oven. HOWEVER have you shopped for any appliance lately? It’s not like we had a choice. It seems that every type of appliance today has wifi built in….. everyone!
