Hi
I am very new to trying to repair my Healey though I have owned it for more than 10 years, but now living in France finding anyone able to help is very difficult; hence my DIY adventure.
I am getting the car ready for its MOT and had no indicator lights or brake lights. Purchased a new flasher unit which worked only interior dash light or only exterior flashers according to the connections, but no brake lights. My question is, can this flasher unit, if defective, stop the brake lights from working?
Any help would be gratefully received.

I see from searching for your introduction post that you have a BT7. That's a useful information, especially for electrical questions.

The most likely problem with both brake lights not working is the Stop Lamp Switch (brake light switch) on 5-way brake fitting on the frame under the distributor. It is activated by fluid pressure and the diaphragms tend to harden.

If I understand your description correctly, with the new flasher, either the dash indicator light or the exterior turn indicator lights work, but not both. The flasher should have three connections:

  • One, a green wire, from the 35-amp fuse to the "B" terminal to supply power,
  • A green with brown stripe one, from terminal "L" to terminal #1 on the 8-terminal flasher relay. This eventually sends power to the traffricator and external indicator lamps.
  • A light green one that goes from terminal "P" to the dash indicator lamp. When the exterior lamps flash on, the dash lamp should be off, and vice versa.

My neighbor is looking at this Healey BT7 with a brake light issue. The owner mentioned he noticed it works intermittently last month and he wasn't able to fix it due to health issues. We'll take a look at it after we installed the new suspension from 4Wheelonline onto his Jeep this week.

For lack of photographs just pull up the proper parts diagrams on the Moss Motors web site. It gives you what you need.
