Elizabeth II, Rest In Peace

R.I.P. A very remarkable life. She always put service before everything else.

I saw her in person at a country fair a long time ago. She rode past in an open RR.

Always remember the incident at the Trooping the Colour when a fire cracker was thrown under her horse and it started to bolt. Despite riding side saddle she controlled the horse and continued as if nothing had happened. I can't find the video but did find one of the ceremony.

" ... things would come and go but the Queen was always there."

+1 on that for sure.

And many of us will miss her steady, respectable, and honorable presence.

Everything exuded class...

I wondered when this would happen. Every time she showed up in the news since Prince Philip died she has seemed increasingly frail. I expect like so many other long term couples that loss took too much out of her. But on the good side, so few get to be with grandchildren and great grandchildren who are old enough to remember their time with her. Condolences to the family.

One of my favorite stories of her was when she was walking in hills outside of Balmoral when two American tourists on vacation reportedly approached her. She was accompanied by Richard Griffin, also known as Dick, who served as the queen's royal protection officer.

One hiker – not aware of who he was speaking to – asked the queen where she lived. She replied that she lived in London and said she had a holiday home nearby, but did not specify that she was referring to Balmoral.

The hiker then asked her if she had ever met the queen.

"I haven't, but Dick here meets her regularly," Elizabeth reportedly said. The hiker immediately turned his attention to the bodyguard and asked him what the monarch was like in person.

"I was with her a long time and I knew I could pull her leg," Griffin said. "I said, 'Oh, she can be very cantankerous at times, but she's got a lovely sense of humor.'"

Overjoyed, the hiker unwittingly asked the queen if she could take his picture with Griffin.

"Before I could see what was happening, he gets his camera and gives it to the queen and says, 'Can you take a picture of us?'" Griffin recounted.

Elizabeth took a picture of the two before Griffin took the camera and photographed the queen with the unknowing tourists.

"I'd love to be a fly on the wall when he shows those photographs to friends in America and hopefully someone tells him who I am," the queen allegedly told Griffin.

I saw a video recently where he was recounting that story!

My wife and I were standing behind the gates at Buckingham Palace. A gentleman from inside the palace offered to take the “children” to see #10 Downing St. He instructed the guards to open the gate and walked my kids down to the residence of Margaret Thatcher. When we got home and had the film developed we couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw our little children standing in front of #10 Downing St.
The Beefeater guard told me the gentleman that took my kids was the “Royal Housekeeper” when in fact he was an officer manager. Good times.

Elliot - that is a great story! Sounds like you were quite honored.

Yes I was. I wrote the office manager a thank you note and received a handwritten reply on Royal Stationery.

I was mistaken about the fire cracker. Someone in the crowd shot at her with a pistol. The rest was correct about her controlling her horse Burmese.

On the lighter side - I see that,at age 73,Charles finally got a job.

Watching some of the UK events on You Tube this came up.

I saw one of these displays at a county fair in about 1975. It is always a great show. The field guns are loud at close range even with blanks.

My grandad born 1900 and long gone always joked I should become coronation program seller.
Not taking careers advice from him again
Looks like I’ll have to work now !!!!
My dad bought two sets of these coronation coin sets in 1953 for my brother and me.

Slightly tongue in cheek ahead but interesting none the less. Apparantly it isn't old car owners that struggle with lack of documentation, closed suppliers and a general lack of information

Surprising, considering the historical background and meticulous detail given other things like baby strollers (prams?) and female Royals' clothing.
