Gearbox oil

Hi, does anyone know if it's ok to replace gearoil with motor oil ( 20/50) in Austin A30 gearbox? My car has gearoil in gearbox at moment, but engine oil is recommended. Dave Barnes

You posted your question in "Forum Happenings" which is really meant as a forum for Admin here to post about things going on with the forum (like new upgrades to the software, etc.). Since you have an Austin 30 I'm moving your post to our "BMC forum". You can also post a second similar post perhaps in our restoration and tools forum.

Every British car I have owned has had whatever the manual suggests. Is there a reason the heavier gear oil was put in in the first place? Might be hiding noise. Replace as you can, but if noisy may have to go back.

Thanks Larry, that's good advice. I acquired the car in January this year, gearbox had gear oil in it, but engine oil ( 20/50 ) is recommended. Kind regards Dave
