While we all enjoy the long weekend and the appliance sales, take a moment to remember the reason for the day. This was at Fort Rosecrans Veterans' Cemetery on Point Loma, San Diego, from our recent trip.

Attended our local Veterans Park ceremonies yesterday. Two cameras, lots of images. Out of all of them, the two favorites:

Thanks - people need to remember that this day is for those
who lost their lives,& not just another day off.

I’m not afraid to correct people if they say “happy Memorial Day”. That’s an interesting shot of the bugle, you can see the device in it that has recorded music. Most likely not enough real bagel players around to really play taps.

That bugs me too - even thought I know their intentions are good. It also kinda bothers me that the day has been so commercialized. However, full disclosure: our washing machine (the one in which I recently replaced the drum bearing) started making a loud clunking noise again on spin cycle so we've decided to buy a new washer / dryer combo. I would have been dumb not to take advantage of the sales going on this week end.

Lost my Uncle Jake in WW2 when his ship was torpedoed. He and his mates never got a chance to come back home and be buried here. I don't think there's a marker anywhere to acknowledge this. (n)

It's a shame to see a digital player in that bugle. Taps is not hard to play and there are tons of high school kids that could play it.

This group that perform the 21 Gun Salute and play Taps are members of an American Legion post, the usual bugle player was ill and couldn't make the date so they had to improvise.

I agree that they could get a youngster to play taps. But saying that, many members are getting up in years and illnesses are a daily issue for many. Nice to see a member playing taps in uniform, kinda makes it more realistic, in a sense. One of the most beautiful renditions I ever heard was done in the movie "Pearl Harbor", kinda chokes you up while listing to it.

May our heroes, God bless them, rest in peace.
