Basil's post in Photography yesterday got me thinking about Bob Hope's decades of service to our military overseas. Here's a clip of Bob with Irving Berlin, in Germany during Operation Vittles:

For you young'ns, Operation Vittles took place in 1948-1949.
Here's a good book from my library.

Except:
" I have no regrets. I've known most of the great personalities of our time, in politics, sports, and show business. I've flown a few million miles and have been fortunate enough to meet thousands of our men and women in uniform, in war and peace, and have had as a guests on my shows some of the most beautiful women in the world.

If I had my life to live over again, I wouldn't have the strength.

But I'd like to try."

I respect the fact that far beyond what might have been expected he continued doing USO work. I don't think anyone would have held it against him had he stopped after WW2 and done only occasional appearances, yet he continued for decades after that point simply because he wanted to give back to those in service.

The closest thing we have today to a Bob Hope is perhaps Gary Sinise who tours all over with his "Lt Dan Band." I had the opportunity to see him (up close) a few years back when he did a show here for Wounded Warriors.

Wasn't it Bob Hope who, when asked, "who would want to live to be 100," replied, "ask a 99 year old?"

One pal's dad on his ninety-ninth birthday said: "After gettin' this far, may as well stick around."

He made it just past the century mark. Great guy, too. A life well lived.

A colleague of mine was visiting a parishoner on his 99th birthday. My friend asked how it felt being 99 and the man responded 'it's a lot shorter looking back at it than it was looking ahead to it.'
