Car repair for dummies-Darwin award edition

Towing empty boat trailer to pick up boat. Shackle that holds axle in place broke. Wheel moved backward and outward. Pulled over pulled out winch cable and wrapped it around axle. Pulled axle back in line and towed the rest of the 80 miles to pick up boat. Went to trailer shop and got correct shackle to install.

As a 17 year old kid, I was driving with my two buddies for a two week exploration of the US east coast. Driving a 1973 Mercury Capri 4 cylinder. We were about 100 miles away from home when temps started going up along with an alternator idiot light. Opened up hood and saw there was no belt. Pulled out my shoe laces (from my black Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars) and tied them up to make a belt. Didn't work - they slipped too much. Knotted the shoelaces every three or four inches and that was just enough to keep the temps under control and some power from the alternator. Found an auto parts store at next exit.

Panty hose works well, as well as giving you an added benefit.

There was a commercial somewhere online.
I don't recall if it was for the Jaguar XK120 or Stockings but it was great.

As teenage boys, we used our shoelaces but told everyone we used pantyhose. Then one of my buddies went into the ad business.

That's the ad I remember.
How could i forget?
I still don't know what they are advertising, or care.

Rear motor mount bolt on my 62 Corvair broke and the engine fell out. Car coasted to a stop on Route 22 near Dover Plains, NY.. Walked to a nearby garage, drove back with the mechanic; he jacked up the motor, wired it up with baling wire and I got home ok.
