Photos... Lots of photos... My annual slideshow

One other thing, related to what has been siad... In recent times I'm starting to enjoy doing photography that is less than perfect, quite on purpose... Does this photo count? On a snowy evening, a far from perfect photo that I took (that probably won't win anything) but I love the mood of it...

There are some photos that have won Pulitzers that were not technically great photos. There are actually lenes you can buy (Lens Baby comes to mind) that will intentionally soften an image to add an etherial feel.

I just feel that some digital photography has become full of clarity, in some ways almost too much clarity, I think something less perfect leaves more to the imagination, but probably doesn't win many awards in most photo competitions :sneaky:

And predictably, this photo failed epicly during a camera club competition, because it's not a crisp clear image... I don't care that much anyway... :p
Those "judges" would likely even diss Alfred Eisenstaedt's shots (if they didn't know who took 'em). You got nothin' to care about! 😉

James, I'm no photographer but that's an excellent photo. The one thing I've learned about your photo club over the years is that it must be full of pedantic fools.

Not much different than some of the professional organizations I've been involved with, either. "You could've done this" or "You should have done that." I'm pretty much indifferent to most of it, I know what I like and a "good photograph" isn't necessarily a technically "perfect" one with me. It's how an image conveys a feeling or message.

It's interesting that every hobby seems to attract its version of rivet counters. I am sure we have all, at a car show had some 'helpful' individual explain everything that was wrong with our cars.

Here's a New Year's wish to ignore those people and to enjoy what we enjoy (and a determination not to become one of those people ourselves)

They are good people I have just mostly stopped competing in the competitions... I always enjoyed attending the meetings (back when they were live), and hopefully they will in the future again (ahem), hate Zoom! Plus I'm the club treasurer right now...

Oh, I'm not suggesting that they aren't decent people. Just people so caught up in the correct method, at least in their minds, that the results are not important.

I remember my former boss recounting the time one of his Porsches lost at a show because the judges docked him points for his screw heads not all pointing the same way on his dashboard.

Usually the organization as a group develops judging criteria that includes technical (focus, exposure etc) composition, artistic…blah blah blah.
