Though not so much in the public eye in the last years, but a remarkable man. A friend was a missionary in Lesotho and South Africa and got to know him and said he had a wicked snese of humour. To the point that people were often so flabergasted by a man that they could only imagine as completly 'holy' that they didn't know how to respond.
Example. Tutu was the General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches from 1978 - 1985. In 1988 the offices of the South African Council of Churches were bombed. As (then ) Archbishop of cape Town he goes to inspect the damage. Takes one look at the damage and turns to those showing him around and declares; "what have you done! It was in perfect condition when I left it."

"We may be surprised at the people we find in heaven. God has a soft spot for sinners. His standards are quite low."
