Beginning to rid th' hovel of all old computer detritus. Dozens of old hard drives going to the shredder, obsolete and dysfunctional laptops, dead power supplies and motherboards, old NIC's & modems... GONE!

It makes room to stage the next round to go.

With a lot more yet to go. Over 25 years of riding herd on a number of local businesses, it added up. A couple years ago I'd met a young woman, wounded Iraqi war vet, her family's business is securely disposing of (as in shredding with documentation) drives and such. I never trusted franchised outfits to do so. The ma & pa folks have government contracts. The community here is close, word of mouth is better than any amount of advertising, it's how I got a few local businesses as I.T. clients. Kept my "light under a bushel" as the saying goes. Put Linux servers in some, built secure custom Linux kernel firewall machines, played "wire rat" to network LAN's. As hardware would fail, it would be secured here, it built up over time. Finally called the local company and we're slowly taking care of all the obsolete gear. Mutual trust plays a big part in it.

...anybody want a N.I.B. 5-station issue of Windows NT 3.0?!? :devilgrin:

Sooo true! I've known a couple guys with businesses running OLD junk hardware and software who benefited from "dumpster diving" rather than upgrade. They didn't become my clients.

You have inspired me! I have a ton of old steroids (<< auto correct did this!! I meant stereos), CD Players, VCRs, computer gear, etc., that I know I'll never use again. Every time I look at it I think "I really need to get rid of that stuff." Ok, I'm gonna do it!

All the hard drives were wiped ahead of time, some had recoverable data we got paid for back-when. No bitcoin tho.

The purge is just begun. Plenty more "stuff" to deal with. :sigh:

Do some research on "old stereo" stuff - some of it can be quite valuable. I have a few select pieces of my grandfather's original rig from the late 1950's, its insane how much people are paying for vintage gear, even in non-working condition. Not that I'd sell even at the collector prices. Certain brands and labels are really timeless and worth selling, there was a lot of junk made also. And some brands were top shelf in the 50's and 60's but became junk by the 80's and 90's (usually because they got bought out by some overseas holding company which then burned through the formerly good reputation of the brand by putting the name on substandard crap that was priced like quality gear).
 
Only "old stereo" stuff here is what my dad built from component parts back in the '50's & '60's. A couple 500W/channel (vacuum tubes & big transformers!) power supplies, amps and pre-amps. Wouldn't be inclined to sell those. The rest are solid-state Radio Shack or old, half-working cheap "shelf" amps not worth keeping.
 
Selling stuff isn't easy anymore, you have to find someone else like yourself that might want it. I just throw mine out, not taking that time.
 
Some of that old stereo equipment is really well built and has excellent sound reproduction. I run a late 60s McIntosh 1700 amp and reciver unit, a Thorens TD 145 turn table, and a pair of Norman Lab model 10 speakers. It is a set up that still sounds better than anything you can buy for less than a couple of grand today.
 
We did save my wife's Dad's reel to reels. Her Dad had recordings of the Big Bands that he piped out to his back porch so he could sit and watch the backyard and smoke his pipe. Pull up in the driveway and hear his music.
 
I have a '70's Pioneer SX1280 receiver.It's a really cool,weighs 65 pounds.
I have a pair of Sansui speakers,but the problem is that I have it in a small room,
so the sound quality isn't great.
I've seen them constantly go for over $2000,so if someone will pay me that
much,it'll be gone.
