Just returned from 20 days... into Peru (upper Amazon, Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu) and Ecuador (Quito and out to the Galapagos). Check all that off ye ol' bucket-list. Man do those countries have their act together when it comes to Covid.
Anyway, occupancy down there is in the 15-20% realm (lucky us)... and in the Galapagos we had many places entirely to ourselves!

Bravo! Always wanted to see Macchu Pichu. What a great adventure you've had!

Thanks. Been putting this one off for 20 years. Was initially a tad worried about the 12,000 elevation in some places (though Machu Picchu itself is only 7,900) and we took the meds for that (which probably wasn't needed - just need to go slow). Took malaria pills for the Amazon (also probably not needed), but spraying clothing with Permethrin and putting 40% DEET on exposed skin worked well there.

Beautiful! (You look good in a grass dress. Who's the guy with the facemask? )

Definitely on my bucket list.

LOL Their village elder... this of the Yaragua tribe that live on a large island in the Amazon river. By the way, the Amazon is as brown as mud. Even in the so-called small "black water" tributaries it is hard to see underwater... but boy is there stuff lurking. Using raw meat, it took maybe 3 seconds to catch piranha (about 5" long ones with serious teeth - here is a guide kindly removing a hook before we threw it back).

Those are some serious looking teeth.

There's quasi-dangerous stuff everywhere (though we didn't see any snakes)... like poisonous tree-frogs and tarantulas and army ants (that you don't want to mess with). We also got to go to a research station where there were about a dozen canopy-walking systems (most about 100' off the ground and a bit bouncy); these consisted of planks on aluminum ladders, but there was a wrap-around net so that you couldn't fall.

great trip - thanks for the pics

Hey, Mark -

We've been to Ecuador several times on mission trips - Guyaquil, Manta, and Quito. My favorite place, though, was Cuenca, a pre-Columbian town whose architecture is lovely. Also Otovalo, with its huge, city-wide outdoor market. Never made it out to Galapagos.

I definitely wish we'd spent more time in Quito... so we'll surely try to return. We did visit a city market in Quito (the La Carolina one) - it was amazing with fruit that I couldn't even identify. We only stopped for a plane change in Guyaquil on the way to the Galapagos.
So much to see and do.

Guayaquil is a busy place. We stayed downtown near the river. Nice park nearby, full of iguanas.

If you go back (we probably won't), be sure to make your way to Cuenca - you won't be disappointed!

Looks like a great trip! Thanks for sharing the pics!

I have a cousin that worked in Cuenca in some sort of rural education operation (and he returns about once per year). He speaks fluent Spanish so there were no obstacles to much of anything. Quito really had a lot of wonderful sites. We also went a little north to do the touristy standing across the equator thing (a bit like standing across the prime meridian in Greenwich, England).

Going through (editing, deleting) photos... and forgot about this one. Yes, it's a "delicacy" in Peru. Guinea Pig!
Confession: it tasted fine!

Yes, or more like early Spring. Perfect weather because it is also their dry season (which is from June to December).

Hey, meat's meat! ;)

 I'd never have known what is was.

As for seasons down there (Don), one is so close to the Equator that it's mostly about dry vs. wet seasons. Little variation in temps.

I know that as our property is 16.393 Latitude. Not a lot of temp and sunset variations...just wetness
