My dad and maternal grandmother get the credit, or the blame depending on your viewpoint, for making me one of those who wants to know what's going on everywhere and know where everywhere is.

Similar here. Grandad was a Nat Geo lifetime member since childhood, he was the one to go to for answers when we were kids. If he didn't know it from memory we'd go down to his basement and check the indexes to find appropriate references. Dad would hand me books to read, history, novels, just about anything he'd read and found interesting. Mom was a Book of the Month Club member, I got benefit of that too. Prefer a book to a screen or "audible books."
 
My dad was a big history and politics reader, all sides of it not just one. And my grandmother was a history teacher in high school, wrote a number of "history of" books for local groups/institutions and until she retired the start of the 70s would travel all around the world with a group of teachers each summer break. So I have my own piles of history from the Greek days till now, American and world and I tell people I come by it honestly through inheriting the desire to "know". Fun part is when someone says something and asks why I know something obscure that I replied with...
 
I agree 100%. Ditto for books. I have purchased some books that are readable via my Kindle App, but I much prefer actually having the printed book, with real pages to turn.

When our son was at the USNA (Naval Academy) one of his friends/Midshipmen
was dating Clancy's Daughter.
 
Our paperboy delivers the WSJ, NYT and the Boston Globe from one car. I wonder if they all get printed by the same outfit?

Sometimes we get the wrong paper - but all three are pretty decent, so we get a slightly different perspective on the news that day!
