Tourist Torphy Stainless Steel Exhaust Systems

There have been several posts recently about stainless steel exhaust systems. I would like the honest opinion of those who have installed Tourist Trophy (Moss Brand) SS exhaust systems. I have one for my BT7 that I am getting ready to install but I am hoping it will not be louder than the mild steel system I have always used. I understand "louder" is subjective and I can live with a slightly different sound, but not more noise. Anyone have one installed and care to share your thoughts?

Problems:
Muffler shops not equipped to refit if required
Sound is tinny compared to original system
Baffles in mufflers often come loose and rattle
Muffler shape which is predominantly round adds to the ground clearance problem
Joints hard to seal using conventional clamps-RTV added to the joints will cure this

These are some of the problems I have experience with the SS units on the market.

re: "Sound is tinny compared to original system"

We put a Falcon SS system on our BN2. It did sound tinny for a while, but seems to have mellowed with age.

I have the Tourist Trophy exhaust system on my BT7. Sounds great to me. I don't think it sounds tinny. Quieter than the Monza system previously installed. Now I can have a conversation and even hear the radio.

IMHO The sound is tinny. Apparently this improves over time as the muffler "seasons." I didn't get a chance to experience that as the baffles on mine failed pretty soon after I purchased it.

Installed the Tourist Trophy system 4-5 years ago and was most impressed with the fit. No loose baffles yet???? Beautiful noise right from the get go. Good clamps and sealer recommended.

I installed a Bell system on my Healey and I had inquired about that "tinny sound" before buying it and was told that it will go away as carbon builds up in it.

Well I'll find out soon. My car should be back from four in tune in 3-4 weeks. I listened to every sound clip of the Tourist I could find and They all sounded great so I went for it.The Monza is way too loud for Me.

I installed the Tourist Trophy system on my BJ-8 about 4 years ago and no issues at all. Fit good out of the box. I did use a sealant to be sure the joints sealed. I think it sounds good and not any noticeable difference from the steel system that finally rotted.

I bought one for my 1960 bt7. It was extremely loud. At cruising speed, acceleration and decel, it was ear splitting. Moss took the muffler back and gave me a website for a UK distributor. I installed it with the moss( tourist trophy) headers and tail pipes. Quieter than the stock system I had but nice. They are looking into the issue.

Paul, thanks for your comment. It was your post on an earlier thread that got me wondering about this system. I did call Moss and the rep told me they had sold about 240 of the early 3000 systems and had 5 returned. He also said they had some issues with the internal packing and have changed the packing. Since I've had mine in the box for about 16 months, I don't know how it was made. I've decided to install it and see. The system looks so well made and is simply beautiful to look at.
Paul, do you remember what brand or where you purchased your replacement muffler from the UK?

Don`t bother with the TT my BT7 sounds like a tank (from my wife) I`m in the process of ordering a Bell from the UK AH Spares. I have less than 500 miles on my Moss TT and I`m done with it, even emailed a complaint to Moss Motors. Either I got a bad batch one or just a garbage system. It was the SS polished one also. Cheers Terry Vancouver BC

I went through 3 sets of BJ8 TT mufflers from Moss before I gave up.

I started this thread 6 years ago before I had finished my restore. I’ve been back on the road for 3 years or about 5,000 miles. The TT system was easy to install and still looks beautiful. I have to laugh at myself because I don’t care for chrome wire wheels because IMO they are too blingy, but the polished SS exhaust is just beautiful. 😃 The sound is not quiet but also not obnoxious. it is a sports car after all. I'm still happy with the system and I’m pretty sure it will out live me.

Rob,

I, like many in this thread, have had bad luck with TT Exhaust System from Moss. Although Moss will replace the components under warranty, you are stuck with the removal and replacement cost.

Many in our area, including me, have found the mild steel muffler from Healey Surgeons the best way to go. They have a good sound, are a quality product, and are not made in China. You will never regret going with the mild steel muffler from Healey Surgeons.

BN6, did you install the mild steel muffler with the SS down pipes and SS tail pipes? Did they fit? Just asking in case my muffler goes south.

The outside diameter of the BJ8 TT front pipe is 1.9 " so it may take some fiddling to mate it to a stock BJ8 muffler. My next try will be a big bore BJ7 muffler from AH spares.
