Grass growing long, so it was mower time. Battery was completely discharged. It's a brand new battery, bought last month from AutoZone. I'm charging it up now but what could be wrong - other than an outdated or shorted battery? Hooking up my charger, the positive clamp fell off - wire broke off. Trimmed the insulation back and soldered the cable back in and hooked up. Will have to let it charge overnight. Grass still growing. Now I'll have to rake it or risk dead patches.

The clamp fell off the charger cable or the battery cable? If it was the battery cable, the battery may not have gotten charged by the tractor generator.
Charger cable. Battery cables are perfect. If I can get it started tomorrow, I can check if it's charging when running. I hooked up two alligator clip wires to attach to the battery at one end and my trusty Radio Shack multimeter at the other end when engine is running while I sit on the seat. There's an interlock that stops the engine when the operator gets off the seat and my trusty wife won't be around tomorrow am to plunk her butt down on the seat.

Might want to check with the mower off if it shows a discharge, maybe you have something drawing a current.

If you put a 12V test light between the negative post and cable and the light glows, something is drawing power. Are there fuses involved in the tractor? Pulling them one at a time 'til the light goes out will find the device drawing current.

A fully charged “12 volt” battery will show 12.6 volts when at equilibrium. Can you measure amps or milliamperes with your MM?
