Sweet, Elliot! Do you have a launch date yet?Have the kids been watching Spacex progress?
Today is launch day. My grandkids are visiting from Boston and the weather is perfect for a “go”.
In addition to the two rockets I built over the winter, I built a glider that will launch like a rocket and then glide back.

The kids should be thrilled! The glider will likely be the most memorable for them. A good visual result to a launch.

Have fun! (y)

I made a jig and balanced the glider. I tested it in the backyard and it flew straight and level. So good in fact, it may not return to the launch area.

Unless the rocket burns the wings off.
Don’t think that thought didn’t cross my mind. Note the vertical stabilizer on the bottom for that very reason.

Elliot - that is so cool !

Say, wouldn't placement of the rocket be better over the horizontal stabilizers at the empennage? Seems that would give the same thrust, but would be less likely to burn the whole rig to ashes. You could adjust weight and balance as needed.

Tom, the “rocket pod” is designed to separate at apogee. The pod has a streamer to visually track its decent. The glider was balanced without the rocket pod.

Have fun - but be careful!
Will do... thanks!
I'm still recovering from my biking accent 3 1/2 weeks ago so I don't want/need anymore injuries.

Be far enough away from houses that it couldn't catch fire and "glide" to someone's roof! :scared:
Already picked out a large open field away from residential area.

One of my son's Merit Badges involved launching rockets. The first one went up..........and was never seen again! Absolutely NO idea where it went. The second one went up and came back within 20 feet of the launch pad. Felt pretty good about that one, especially after the first one.

A very successful launch. We launched about six times and only had one chute malfunction.
The grandkids had lots of fun.
Some videos attached... sorry I had trouble tracking them inflight.

I always wanted to try that with my grandson but we never got a round tuit. Ok, who was it that posted one of those just a couple of weeks ago?
