Ebay payments fun

As we've discussed before in the Pub, ebay has decided not to default to PayPal for buying and selling.

I just sold a lawn care tool. Message from ebay "Your item has sold and the buyer has paid".

No record at PayPal, and buyer says "yes, I've paid". Just after I got the ebay message above, I got another email from ebay saying I haven't updated my account information, so any payments I receive are being held.

I went to ebay, saw the "alert - you need to update your account information". Clicked that link, and ebay asked for my bank routing number, my checking account number, my name "as on the account". Also said "your name must match the information in your ebay account".

No way am I going to give ebay my personal bank information - so looks like I can't get paid. Buyer said he already sent payment through ebay. Ebay will only pay directly to my bank account. I, and buyer, can't cancel the payment unless I enter my bank info.

yeesh - with PayPal it was so much quicker, and I've had no problems with PayPal since I opened the account 15 years ago.

yeesh yeesh

PS - if you give ebay your bank info, you also have to agree to give ebay permission to call you, email you, text you, etc. for "any activities related to your account"

I *might* continue using ebay for finding stuff I need, but sure won't be using ebay for selling any more. They're pushing out us small guys, and making things easier for the big guys.

I feel your pain... I got their "final notice" last week informing me that if I don't update my eBay account with my bank info I won't be able to sell. Well, they can kiss my you know what.... not going to give them my bank info.

What about opening a separate bank account with a minimum balance?
I too, thought the old way worked well,& hate giving out too much personal
information.
Kind of reminds me of a bumper sticker - "MAKE ORWELL FICTION AGAIN"

I like that Orwell reference!

No more selling here, either. And Orwell? That horse has left the barn...

The plot thickens! Today the buyer emails me through ebay. "When are you going to ship?" (Remember, he just bought it yesterday.)

Me: Soon as I receive payment.

He: But I've already paid, so ship it today. I paid on ebay PayPal yesterday

Me: I haven't received payment yet. My Paypal account shows no activity in the last ten days.

He: But I already sent you payment on ebay PayPal. Send it today. EDIT: should be "Ship it today."

Jump through the ebay contact hoops, get number to call, ebay says "we are experiencing heavy call volume. Please hold."

So if the guy has paid using PayPal, why would ebay need my bank info?

hmmmm

No one wants to have a person actually talk to you. I had a question for HR where I work, went through the "chatbot" as directed and got a page long message back quoting state law and policy and not answering my question about how to correct an error. So, called the number it said to use if the response didn't answer my question. Got a robot that told me to use the "new and improved" chatbot as that was the contact per HR policy, and it promptly hung up on me.

Mike - that happens to me just about 100% of the time I try to get help or get an answer online.

One of the most common results when I actually call a "help line" - "Thank you for calling XYZ, where your satisfaction is our top priority. Please listen carefully to all choices, as our voice menu has changed."

Would love to see a funny video on an aircraft in trouble, the pilot calls tower for help, and gets a "help line voice mail menu".

yeesh

Please listen carefully to all choices, as our voice menu has changed.
At that point I start saying "representative" into the phone.

At that point I start saying "representative" into the phone.

"I'm sorry, I can't understand that. Please try again."

Greg - I've only had "representative" work once to get me directly to a human. Help, Service, Customer, Representative, Agent, etc. are some of the options, but not always clear when you've listened to a long spiel like "If you want to hear our special COVID safe handling policies, press star seven. Otherwise, press pound sign for our voice menu. Tired of waiting for the next agent? You can get almost all your questions answered by visiting our website at w w w dot goombahgarumpus dot org. That's w w w dot goombahgarumpus dot org"

Basil - not a CT accent (there are several of them!), but a good ol' Maine accent for you:

When's the last time you drove your Flivver through Millinocket?

As Jack Benny once said ... "We had three children. Eeny, Meeny, Miney, and stopped there. We didn't want no Moe.

As a ebay seller, You are now required to let Ebay deposit into a bank account. No matter how the buyer pays, Ebay will transfer the money into the account listed with them. No one I know is happy about this and most will no longer sell thru ebay. I'm not sure if I will or not. The ONLY way I might sell is if I get a different account just for that. Paypal and Ebay are Totally separate now. I think they made a BIG mistake.

If enough people balk, they'll change. But don't hold your breath.

Still puzzled at the problem. If the buyer chooses to pay using PayPal, why would ebay need your bank account info? PayPal already has that info (and I've used PayPal for over ten years w/o problem).

If buyer choose to pay using an ebay payment system (not PayPal), so be it. But if buyer uses PayPal ... why is ebay even involved in that?

Inquiring minds want to know!
Thanks.
Tom M.
