China is what I remember too. In fact I still use that phrase sometimes. Don't know why though.
 
Never could understand why a starving child in China would make me want to eat.
 
All I can think of is this. (Not sure if you have watched the Cozy Mystery New Tricks but one of the best lines in the series is "I thought all Scottish food was based on a dare."

 
The phrase I heard when I'd turn down turnips (blech ...): Think of the starving children in Armenia.

Got me and my brother to appreciate and feel lucky that we had food on our plate.
