My wives' smart phone has a location feature who shows every place the phone has been--a certain day or month--whatever??? The map
then shows up on the home laptop--(Am I the only person who just realized that smart phones do this? )----
 
Our iPhones and iPads do that and as long as you have the app on the computer, it can also find the other person's phone, you can even watch them moving from one place to another. Is it safe in this day and age? That is a good question, but with all the hackers out there, I don't trust it. JMHO. PJ
 
Just another reason to not buy apple products.
 
What's weird to me is you make your wives share a phone.
 
My Android tracks my every move via Google.
Otherwise, my IT son says that Apple products are "Fischer-Price."
 
They also send you messages about stuff in the area you can visit and spend money. Really annoying.
 
With WFH the last year, all anyone would see from mine is moving from the bedroom to the backroom to the bathroom to the kitchen and eventually the living room at the end of the work day...
 
Used to have lunch with a friend who know every place his wife was visiting. He caught her going into a very expensive store on Long Island. I wonder how that came out?
 
But without it, navigation services of various types are unavailable... are they not?
Confessing, though, I don't care of I'm being tracked. Bring it on. :LOL:
 
There are a million different settings; I set tracking services only to the apps I use, and then only "when using".

I don't really care if people know where I am - but I do care somewhat (emphasis not always) that it effects the advertising I see... will the nation-wide mega chain outsmart the local mom-n-pop shops, for example? Not to get political, but there are some outfits that could do with a good old fashioned trust-busting. At the same time, targeted ads have led me to great new discoveries.

I dunno.
 
Yes, it surely does affect advertising, but I thought that was determined a lot by search engine usage.
 
My main concern with tracking (and the assorted social media check-in type things) is that while it is reporting where i AM, it is also reporting on where I AM NOT. So if it reports me as being in a hotel in New Orleans, anyone able to crack the data also knows that I'm not at home 12 hours away and they have at least a full day to help themselves. Fortunately I don't have that kind of phone, nor do I ever tell the internet when I'm going on a trip.
 
There are likely nefarious types out there... but I strongly suspect most aren't that sophisticated (or have the time to do all that).
Meta-data, yes, but tracking specific individuals would be incredibly laborious (but what do I know). 😬
