Old yes but not really old. My 77 Trans am had it behind the plate when I was in highschool.
 
...or the trick tail light on the '57 Olds (and Chevy, too, I believe).
 
In Oregon, you couldn’t pump your own gas. Owners of Austin-Healey 100’s would give the kids fits.
 
Both my daily driver Jeep and the family convertible Caddy have their fillers hidden behind the license plates.
 
"Tri-five" Chevys. Early '50's Caddys. The Mustangs were clever, too.

Once saw a Fiat 850 Spider go up in flames with a mom and two kids aboard. They got out safely and the Fiat was pushed away from the pumps quickly. The "attendant" had overfilled the tank (filler neck IN the engine bay!) and the spill lit off. Poor engineering has no excuse.
