Getting photos off an I phone onto a PC

My wife has an I phone 8 which has thousands of photos on it. I managed to transfer all the folders to my desktop 6 months ago with some difficulty. I think I had to do it folder at a time.

Now I need to get some more photos off the phone for her but I am having issues getting them to copy over to the PC.
I can select the folder I want to copy on the I phone then open the destination folder on the PC. It starts copying OK. Says 8 minutes remaining or something like that then stops and this comes up on the PC. "A Device attached to the system is not functioning" It has copied about 50 or so photos.

I have done the trust this device thing on the phone. I have gone to AutoLock and set it to Never so the phone stays on. I have gone to Photos section on the phone in the Transfer to Mac or PC and changed it from Auto to Keep Original. All these changes are recommended fixes for photo transfer to PC.
Any thoughts?

Something must have been changed by Apple or Windows 10

David - it sounds like the phone is "going to sleep". I've seen that happen on laptop to laptop transfers. Can you turn off the phone's sleep function?

Tom M.

Hello Tom

Thank you.

I thought that is what I was doing when I switched it Display/brightness from 1 minute to never. I will look to see if there is a sleep setting. I do not get the file system. Looking at the photos in the folder they do not seem to be in any order.

David

David - changing brightness/screen settings has nothing to do with the device going to sleep/hibernate/powersave. So check that setting also.

You've already transferred some photos; did you need iTunes to do that?

Tom M.

One doesn't need iTunes to transfer (unless they've changed).

Just realized you have Windows 10. I still have 7.

I have had a couple of iPhones cords that wouldn’t work for data. Also there are flash drives that are USB on one end and the Apple end on the other. PhotoFast is the one I have. The PC should recognize the iPhone when plug in.

Hello Don

Thank you.

If I get this correct you can put a SD card into the photo fast device then plug in your IPhone and the photos transfer to the SD card. Then you could transfer from the SD card to the PC?

David

I have an iPhone and all I do is plug it into the computer with the charging cord. Apples symbol pops up, double click and the process starts. I don't know if it matters, but my latest laptop is an HP, with SSD Drive and Windows 10.

Someone told me I couldn't use the charging cord to connect. So the way I have been doing it is to just email from the iphone to my desktop. Now I'll try that cord next time. But email is pretty simple and quick.

The Photo Fast only a USB/Apple flash drive. I forgot that I had a card reader that was both also. Attached is a pic. Top is the reader bottom is the photo fast.

I use my charging cord all time for data transfer and these are not the original Apple cords. I have a couple that wouldn’t do data.

You have to use the app to do the transfer

Bought a PNY DUO Link. Worked great to get the photos transferred to the PC. Took a while.

Now the issue is some are JPEG and some are HEIC and I can not open them.

Hello Tom

Thank you.

Will check that out this evening. Their file arrangement seems a bit bizarre. It is not sequential.
