Removing BN4 Bonnet

Having read Charlesbn1’s recent post about fitting a bonnet, I’m having second thoughts about removing the bonnet on my 100-6 to do some minor repair work on it. Will it be a monster to put back on properly, and is there anything I can do before removal to ease the return? Or should I just walk away from this project??

Sure you can. Index mark hood / bonnet position to current bolt mounting position(s) on each of the hinges, then remove bonnet. Some drill holes to permanently index position of body panels, doors etc, but you could choose a sharpie pen or paint in your favorite color for marking. I'm doing this and taking digital photos of "works in progress" more often. GONZO

I think "indexing" is more reliable than using a sharpie. You do this by drilling two holes through the hinge and bonnet mounting as pictured on both hinges. When it comes time to reinstall the bonnet, insert the drill bits through the holes to line things up. Easy-peasy.

To remove mine, I removed the pins in the hinges under the dash. No indexing required. I'm not sure if it's standard, but my pins are held in place by cotter pins.

Apparently I too have the pins. Looks like a doable job after all. Thanks everybody!

IMO replacing the bonnet using the index holes is trivial.

Accessing the hinge pins and replacing the cotter pins under the dash would be more of an undertaking. Maybe on replacement one could substitute hitch pins for the cotter pins.

As I get older, anything that involves getting under the Healey dashboard goes way beyond trivial.

Rick - apologies for not being clear. I was referring to the index hole method of hinge location as trivial, not removing the pins under the dash.

Steve - we were saying the same thing, me probably badly. I was agreeing with you, getting underneath the dashboard is a real strain these days. I used to be able to stick my head in the footwell with my feet extended over the top of the seat and attend to all my wiring needs. If I tried that know, they'd probably find a skeleton in that position before I was able to get out.
