Sunday Night Question #1

I'm a sucker for irony. Two of my favorites are Bridge Over the River Kwai and Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Also love the original Great Expectations.

Casablanca for certain, too many others to choose from! Mad, Mad World would be a contender. My Old Fella laughed so much thru that flic he had tears running down his face. Seeing him laugh at all was a rare occasion.

True story - Me and my friend Mike watched Mad Mad World in the Post Theater at the 98th General Hospital Post in Germany. There was a patient (a young GI) who had to be taken to the ER because he was laughing so hard he literally split some stitches in his abdomen.

I should have made this thread "Top 10" :cool-new: So many great movies being mentioned.

It might come as a surprise but my favorite movie is The Maltese Falcon. Picking only one other movie is a tough choice, but I'd probably have to go with The World's Fastest Indian.

I agree with the "top 10"... there are so many good ones.

I know I've already put my two out there, but another favorite is "The Gods Must be Crazy".

I own that movie! Bought it at Walmart in the bargin bin and ripped it to my iTunes collection.

You found that at Walmart? For years it was nearly impossible to find. I had a professor who was the only guy I knew who owned a copy and it was an old VHS that was getting worn out.

Memories, memories ...

Movies today are terrible, especially comedies. Just not funny. I still laugh at Airplane, Slap Shot and Animal House. I did get a kick out of Talladega Nights. It did to Nascar what Slap Shot did to the NHL of the 1970s - expansion hockey. My brother and I have both stopped going to theaters now. Too many loud, obnoxious, violent previews of movies I'll never see, disgusting smell of popcorn and people talking or watching cellphone screens. Wife still goes once in a while with daughter but though I miss the big screen, I'd rather stay home and catch it on TV. That said, we do enjoy the Metropolitan Opera in HD in theaters.

One of my favorite comedies from the past few years is What we do in the Shadows, it is a mockumentary about vampires, that skewers the genre and reminds me quite a bit of This is Spinal Tap.

I haven't seen The Great Waldo Pepper in a loooong time, but remember it fondly. Ben Hur, being a 4 hour movie had good character development. I liked how they took the time to show a deteriorating friendship into bitter enemies.

On that note, I'd say that Game of Thrones is my top pick. There is so much time to show the complexity of all the characters. So many epic scenes. And it is still building in intensity after 8 years.

I picked two, but I don't really have two over everything else. That's why I have a rack in the back of the room running about 6ft wide and 6ft tall with everything from current back to the 20s. Drama, musical, comedy and more, just depends on my mood at any one time when I'm picking.

Truth be told, I'm the same way. On a different day I might have picked two others.

"They Might be Giants" would make a Top Ten here. Along with "The Watch, The Wallet and the Really Big Fish".

โ€œCast a Giant Shadowโ€ a wonderful Kirk Douglas movie.
